Alex Ruston has written a novel that deals with huge questions that currently face our planet. Her novel, set in 2033, sees a world beset with serious natural disasters, religious discord, and political upheaval. It seems that man’s lack of awareness and understanding of the nature of life, and his selfishness is at the heart of the destructive forces the world is suffering. The solution appears to be to follow the example of a small dedicated group at An Lac in Switzerland who take on board the Buddhist philosophy of self awareness as their basis to lead a life of non-violence, tolerance and love. Although the novel presents a bleak picture if the world carries on as it is doing, there is light at the end of the tunnel. For me, the message is that the future is in our hands so let’s rise to the challenge.

Relentless dark forces of error and terror

For those with a dread of fundamentalist religion and environmental disasters, this dystopian novel gives an arresting picture of good people trying to survive against relentless dark forces of error and terror. Characters and places are vividly described with an economy of words and crisp dialogue which makes this a gripping read in the hope of finding out whether good prevails in the end.

Great read

This is a hard hitting story set in a possible future, that of a theocratic dictatorship which has spread throughout Europe. It’s a thought provoking read.

An inspirational book

A great read and I found the characters really brought the book alive. Society needs a book like this to understand the possible consequences of not taking care of each other and our resources. Will definitely read again.

A thoughtful and beautiful book

This novel presented disturbing scenarios but focused on characters whose integrity and spiritual worldview offered an alternative to current conflicts and materialism. Overall it is a beautiful story with an ending that offers hope.

Fundamentally good

A book I continue to find disturbing, the future is bleak, the world is in turmoil and the sanctuary sought is insecure. Alex Rushton offers hope, but I think her prediction for our future is very evident in the world events we are experiencing today. Will we ever live in harmony?

An absorbing account of a forbidding future

It is disturbing to image a future such as outlined so excellently by Alex Rushton. Apart from a remarkable ability to illustrate a rapidly integrating planet, the different personalities with their varying attitudes to circumstances, often beyond there control, are very believable. As the first of a trilogy, I look forward to learning how life continued in this very hazardous existence.
